Google recently announced that as of October 1st 2017 stage 2 kicks in for HTTPS secure sites.
This basically means that if your website is not loading over HTTPS (no SSL certificate) they will be marked as NOT SECURE in your users browser thus turning potential customers away.
HTTPS has long been used on ecommerce sites but these recent announcements mean that ALL sites will be required to have an SSL Certificate.
HTTPS will load faster then without is so this will also be good as Google also will favour faster loading sites over slower ones.
Google Chrome already has 60% of the browser market but other browsers (Microsoft and Firefox etc.) already do have this policy or will follow suit shortly.
"How can I tell if my site has an SSL certificate?"
If your site has a green lock and/or address bar then your site already has an SSL certificate.
